Overactive Bladder Treatment

Living with an overactive bladder may be very difficult. It interrupts the daily flow of life and may prove to be very embarrassing especially when leaks and spills occur. There are various methods available for overactive bladder treatment, each with its own pros and cons.

Bladder Training is a method used for urinary urge and overflow incontinence. It is a natural way of training the bladder and is done hand in hand with a physician. In this process the person with an overactive bladder keeps a voiding diary or journal of all the times when urination and leaking occur. This is then analyzed to identify the pattern of urination and when to empty the bladder before a spill occurs. This may be used with Kegel exercises.

Medication is also available as an overactive bladder treatment. These drugs are taken once a day to control the bladder. These work by affecting the nervous system and the receptors in the smooth muscle which reduces the contraction of the muscle surrounding the bladder and lessens wetting incidents. Results are usually seen within two weeks of use. There are however, side effects to these medications. They may range from something mild like having a dry mouth, drowsiness and constipation to something greater like hypertension. Medication is also not advised for those who may have glaucoma, stomach, kidney, liver and urinary problems.

A transdermal system is another overactive bladder treatment. This is a clear thin patch which is placed on the hip or abdomen twice a week. Medication is released from the patch to the skin and into the bloodstream. Side effects may include irritation in the area of application, constipation and dry mouth.

Alternatives

With the adverse effects of the overactive bladder treatments mentioned above, a natural herbal supplement may be a better alternative. Flotrol is a natural pill treatment system made from pumpkin seed and soybean germ extracts. Both these extracts have been used over time as a way to deal with bladder problems. They work by strengthening the muscles that surround the bladder lessening the urge for frequent urination and leaks. Studies show that improvements were seen in as early as the first week of use. The best part is that this natural pill has had no adverse side effects and can be used for long term. With this you can effectively treat your overactive bladder without worrying about side effects.
